ABOUT ZENITH ENERGY & TAR SANDS OIL
ZENITH ENERGY, headquartered in Houston, TX is expanding their oil terminal in Northwest Portland in order to increase the import and processing of Canadian Tar Sands Crude. The extraction of Tar Sands Crude Oil is exceptionally filthy process. Devastating an area in northern Alberta the size of the state of Florida, The Alberta Tar Sands Project has been called the largest and most destructive industrial project in human history, producing a multitude of disastrous effects including the poisoning of the region's water, land and air. Additionally, the extraction of Tar Sands Crude Oil is also implicated in exacerbating Climate Change.

Transporting oil by rail amplifies the potential of calamitous explosions such as the one that occurred near Lac-Mégantic, Quebec in 2013, resulting in the loss of 47 lives. Closer to home in June, 2016 a train carrying Bakken Crude derailed and caught fire near Mosier, Oregon releasing toxic fumes, flames and smoke, threatening the community of Mosier and the precious Columbia River and Gorge. OUR CITY IS AT RISK! The transport of Tar Sands Crude through the Portland Metro area creates an enormous physical threat not only to the homes, schools, businesses and land adjacent to the tracks, but to the population and region as a whole; the priceless natural environment in which we take such pride and pleasure. Adding to the peril, Zenith Energy's Terminal is located in the North Portland Industrial Area, a region at high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake. The threat of catastrophic and irreparable pollution in this eventuality should be of great concern to everyone in our region. • Tar Sands Oil extraction is a colossal environmental disaster. • Tar Sands Oil extraction adds to Climate Change. • Tar Sands Oil spills are enormously toxic. • Tar Sands Oil burns and explodes, emitting deadly fumes. • Tar Sands Oil, when spilled sinks in water making cleanup nearly impossible.
